New Year, New Me? Do We Really Need Resolutions?
Drs. Caroline Gerin-Lajoie & Kerri Ritchie
The start of a new year can be an opportunity for self-reflection. With new year’s resolutions being written about and spoken about in the media, some of us can feel pressured to come up with a list of things to change or new commitments. We know from the research that these resolutions tend to last for 2 to 6 weeks. At best, we forget all the grand plans we have, and at worst we give ourselves a really hard time, and can be down on ourselves.
Another approach may be to think about energy makers and takers. Is there anything that you have noticed that nourishes or feeds you, and that just makes you happy? It could be cooking, nature, connecting with a special person in your life or your pet, movement, music, or art. Can you increase the time you spend in these activities or allow yourself to sink into these moments and get the maximum benefit?
Then ask yourself, what really drains me and takes all of my resources and energy away? Is there any way to decrease or eliminate my exposure to these situations? This could be allowing yourself to say no once in a while, refocusing your time and attention, or investing in different relationships.
It doesn’t matter how many times or how often you use this approach, you will feel an "in the moment benefit."
As of February 10th 2024, according to the Chinese calendar, it will be the Year of the Dragon. The Dragon is thought to bring favorable conditions for change, growth, and progress. The dragon's energy and the grounding influence of the wood element inspires imagination and new ideas.
With this in mind, as you move through 2024, see if you can give yourself permission to balance the energy makers and takers in your life, and this approach may be more beneficial than any wellness resolution!
