Challenging Events

Although we all experience stress, we aren’t always taught how to deal with challenging events.

Critical Incident Stress Debriefing is no longer best practice and has been replaced with a more effective leadership tool - ABC for Challenging Events

A challenging event is...

  • Anything stressful, disturbing, or difficult:

  • A co-worker gets hurt or becomes ill

  • A co-worker’s family member is injured or ill

  • There is a tragedy in your community

  • A natural disaster or tragedy in the world

Leader support is critical and often all that is required after exposure to a challenging event. Most people will experience some “reaction”, but will recover using their own coping strategies

What are the steps?

Acknowledge

First, acknowledge that something has happened and check in with yourself. This shows your body that it can turn off its alarm system.

Back to basics

Emotional and/or brain fatigue can be felt for a few days. Help your body  get back to basics.

Coping & Self Care

After a challenging event, it is normal to feel like we are reliving events. Memories can take 4-6 weeks to settle.
